In tegenstelling tot de documentaire fotografie beoogt de straatfotografie geen verhaal te vertellen. De straatfotograaf wil niks onderzoeken of verhelderen. Het enige doel is de alledaagse werkelijkheid op een eigen wijze registreren.  Meerdere van deze straatfoto’s kunnen wel een sfeer oproepen en achteraf historische betekenis krijgen. Dit is niet de instelling waarmee de persoon met zijn camera de straat op gaat. En ook als een persfotograaf op straat foto’s maakt, zou ik dit geen straatfotografie willen noemen. Bij deze foto’s ligt de nadrukt op de inhoud van het beeld, dat iets moet toevoegen aan een verhaal in de krant of tijdschrift. Doorgaans krijgen deze foto’s hun betekenis door het verhaal erom heen. De straatfotograaf schurkt natuurlijk wel dicht tegen die andere genres aan.

Unlike documentary photography, street photography does not aim to tell a story. The street photographer does not want to investigate or clarify anything. The sole purpose is to record everyday reality in its own way. Several of these street photos can evoke an atmosphere and subsequently acquire historical significance. This is not the attitude with which the person takes to the streets with his camera. And even if a press photographer takes photos on the street, I wouldn’t call this street photography. With these photos the emphasis is on the content of the image, which should add something to a story in the newspaper or magazine. These photos usually get their meaning through the story surrounding them. The street photographer is of course close to those other genres.
